Yonsei University Celebrated 139th Founding Anniversary

Proclaiming the Vision of 'Opening Human Possibilities with Truth and Freedom'


Yonsei University marked its 139th anniversary by announcing a new vision for the future of the Yonsei era, signaling a fresh start.

On May 11th (Saturday), Yonsei University held a ceremony at the Centennial Hall to celebrate its 139th anniversary. The ceremony was attended by Hur Dong-soo, Chairman of the University Board of Trustees, President Dong-sup Yoon, and Lee Kyoung Ryul, President of the Alumni Association.


In his commemorative address, President Yoon stated, "In the spring of 1885, Jejungwon, its name meaning 'Heal the Masses' as its mission, opened the first chapter of our illustrious Yonsei history. The force behind its inception was the dedication and love of missionaries such as Underwood, Appenzeller, and Allen." He continued, "Based on Christian values, Yonsei education has emphasized truth and freedom, and now seeks to implement 'convergence,' the challenge of our times. We will realize Yonsei's vision by fostering 'interdisciplinary convergence' that transcends academic boundaries and establishing a 'global convergence network' through diverse international exchanges and collaborations."


Furthermore, Yonsei University announced its vision of 'Opening Human Possibilities with Truth and Freedom.' Through the realization of this new vision, the university aims to advance the values of 'Trust,' 'Pathfinding,' and 'Dedication,' presenting future-oriented goals for the university.


Following the vision declaration, Yonsei University reported the completion of the virtual campus project, initiated to overcome the physical and institutional limitations of campus space. This project, developed in collaboration with LG Uplus since the first half of 2023, is expected to allow various members to experience the university campus and education without spatial constraints.


The event also included various award ceremonies to recognize outstanding faculty and staff who have contributed to the university's development, including long service awards, entrepreneurship awards, medical awards, academic awards, and the Yonsei Lee Youn Jae Fellowship.
